My Experience with Hendrick's Amazonia

I approached Hendrick's Amazonia with curiosity, given my familiarity with the brand's standard offering and their tendency to explore unusual botanical territories. This limited edition expression takes the distillery's experimental approach into decidedly tropical terrain.

The Flavor Journey

From the first nosing, Amazonia announces itself as something different. The aroma carries bright tropical fruit notes that immediately distinguish it from traditional London Dry gins. When I tasted it, the passion fruit influence came through clearly, supported by other exotic botanicals that create a lush, almost humid quality on the palate. The juniper is still present but takes a supporting role rather than leading the charge.

This flavor profile creates both opportunities and limitations. In a simple gin and tonic, Amazonia shines, transforming a standard serve into something more adventurous. The tropical notes play well with tonic's quinine bitterness and a squeeze of lime. I found it also worked nicely in fruity, summery cocktails where its character could complement rather than clash with other ingredients.

However, when I tried using it in a classic martini or Negroni, the results were less successful. The pronounced fruit character felt out of place in these drier, more spirit-forward contexts. This is a gin that asks you to build drinks around its personality rather than slot seamlessly into traditional recipes.

The Value Question

As a limited edition from an established brand, Amazonia commands a premium over standard Hendrick's. Whether that premium is justified depends on what you're seeking. If you want a unique gin experience and enjoy tropical flavor profiles, the bottle delivers something genuinely different. If you're looking for an everyday gin that handles all mixing situations equally well, the extra cost is harder to justify.

I found myself reaching for it selectively—when I wanted that specific tropical character, or when serving guests who appreciated trying something unusual. It didn't become my default bottle.

Quality and Craftsmanship

The Hendrick's distillery knows what it's doing, and that expertise shows in Amazonia's execution. The botanicals are well-integrated, the spirit is smooth, and there's nothing harsh or unbalanced about the drinking experience. The 43.4% ABV provides enough structure without being aggressive.

Final Thoughts

Hendrick's Amazonia succeeds at being interesting, which is both its strength and its constraint. I enjoyed exploring its tropical personality, and it made certain drinks notably better. But its specificity means it's a supplementary bottle rather than a replacement for a more versatile gin. If you approach it as an occasional indulgence rather than an everyday workhorse, it delivers a worthwhile experience that expands what gin can be.

Scoring breakdown

Flavor Profile & Botanical Balance weight 35% · 82
The tropical botanical blend creates an interesting departure from traditional gin, with noticeable passion fruit and other exotic notes that remain distinct without overwhelming the juniper foundation.
Versatility in Cocktails weight 25% · 75
Works well in gin and tonics and tropical-leaning cocktails, though the pronounced fruit character can limit its use in classic gin cocktails where a more neutral botanical profile would be preferred.
Value Proposition weight 20% · 70
Priced as a premium limited edition expression, it offers an interesting experience but at a cost that exceeds standard Hendrick's, making it more of a special occasion bottle than an everyday pour.
Uniqueness & Innovation weight 15% · 85
The rainforest-inspired botanical selection sets it apart in the gin category, offering a genuinely different flavor experience compared to both standard Hendrick's and most other contemporary gins.
Neat Sipping Quality weight 5% · 72
Drinkable neat for those who enjoy it, though the fruit-forward profile makes it less refined as a sipper compared to more juniper-focused premium gins.
